California’s second-oldest library system, dating to 1878, serves Oakland’s diverse population through collections, materials, and staff that reflect the multilingual and multicultural information and literacy needs of residents. Challenge-grant funding is being used to construct a LEED-rated East Oakland Community Library that provides collections, programs, and services to residents of a challenged neighborhood that lacks library facilities.
