In 1990 the University of Michigan founded the Prison Creative Arts Project, which provides arts education, artist mentoring, workshops, and exhibits to encourage the creation of original works of art by youth and adults in correctional institutions, juvenile facilities, and urban high schools throughout the state. This two-year grant expands the project’s reach and impact by establishing collaborative networks of higher education institutions, community organizations, and community-arts partners in northern and western Michigan.
